Both use the same approved design and both go on top of your own enamel. What separates them is the material, and what the material decides is how long the result holds its edge. Dr. Goh works with both, so the choice is yours to make once you know the trade.

Composite is made to match a shade, and it does not lighten later — so whitening comes first if you want one. Gum reshaping comes first too, when the gum line is what is actually uneven. Both are their own treatment and their own cost, not folded into this.

Why the mold matters

The shape is decided before it is placed.

Freehand composite is sculpted directly on the tooth, so each one is its own small negotiation and the smile is assembled a tooth at a time. It works, and it depends heavily on the day.

  • First, the designYour teeth are scanned and the new smile is drawn against your own face — not against an average one. You see it and approve it before anything else happens.
  • Then, the moldA clear mold is made from that approved design. The composite takes the mold's shape instead of a freehand one, which is how a whole arch ends up matching rather than being negotiated tooth by tooth.

It is a small difference in method and a large one in outcome: what you get is the design you signed off on, rather than an approximation of it. The mold carries surface texture too — that faint, light-catching irregularity is most of what separates teeth that read as real from teeth that read as done.

Is this right for you?

Composite veneers change the shape of teeth — width, length, edges, the gaps between them. That is what they are good at, and knowing it is what keeps expectations honest. Colour is a whitening question. An uneven gum line is a gum question. Teeth in the wrong position are an alignment question, and Invisalign® often comes first.

At the exam Dr. Goh tells you which of those you actually have, in what order they should be handled, and whether composite is the right tool at all — before any design work starts.

  • Great fitChips, worn edges, small gaps, teeth that are shorter or narrower than their neighbours, and anyone who wants to live in a new shape before committing to porcelain.
  • Talk firstGrinding, a heavy coffee habit, or teeth far out of position — all workable, and all reasons the material choice or the order of treatment changes.
  • Something else firstActive gum disease or decay gets treated before any cosmetic work. Whitening and gum reshaping, if you want them, also come first and are quoted on their own.

Individual results vary. Composite is not permanent — it is renewable, which is a different and more useful promise.

Most of the smiles you admire online had more done than veneers.

It is worth saying plainly, because the before-and-after photos never do. In the published cases behind this technique, the gum line was surgically reshaped and the teeth were whitened before any composite was placed — and in the clearest of them, the photograph taken after the whitening and the gum work, with no composite on the teeth at all, already shows most of the change a casual viewer would credit to veneers.

No. This is added on top of the enamel you already have. Nothing is filed down, nothing is shaved off, and that single fact is what makes it reversible — the tooth underneath is untouched, so every option stays open to you later. Porcelain veneers are the opposite: they need a thin layer of enamel removed, and enamel does not grow back.
It depends which of the two materials we use, and Dr. Goh will give you his own honest read at your visit rather than a number off a website. What is worth understanding is why they differ: composite gets its strength from the filler packed into it. The version that flows easily into a mold has less filler, which is exactly what makes it easy to place and also what makes it wear and dull sooner. The tougher version holds up longer and asks more of the appointment. Neither is permanent, and we will tell you plainly which one fits how you use your teeth.
They get renewed, not started over. The design is a saved digital file, so the shape you approved can be rebuilt in the same material — or used to make porcelain later, if by then you want the long-term version. You are not paying to solve the same puzzle twice, which is a real part of why starting here makes sense.
Porcelain lasts far longer and resists stain better, and it costs more and takes enamel to place. Composite is additive, reversible, and quicker, and it will need attention sooner. A fair way to think about it: composite lets you live in the new shape and be certain you want it before committing to something that cannot be undone. Plenty of people are happy staying with composite and never move on.
Composite picks up colour from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco more readily than enamel does, and it cannot be whitened once it is placed — bleach works on natural tooth structure, not on resin. It can be polished, and the polish does bring the surface back. If you drink a lot of coffee, say so at your visit; it changes which material we recommend.
Plan on three, and only one of them is long. First a visit to examine, scan and photograph your teeth. Then a visit where you try the design on and decide — nothing is bonded until you have seen it on your own face. Then the restorative visit, where Dr. Goh does the whole thing in one appointment. A short visit after that finishes the polish along the gum line and between the teeth, and fits the night guard. If you need whitening or gum work first, that runs before all of it on its own timeline.
Because the thing that wears composite fastest is not eating, it is grinding — and most people who grind have no idea they do. The guard takes that load at night instead of your new edges. It is the cheapest thing you will do in this whole process and it does more for how long the result lasts than anything else you can control.
You see it before it is real. We fit a temporary version of the approved design over your own teeth so you can look at it in the mirror, in daylight, and say what you want changed. It is additive, so it comes straight off — and it comes off before you leave the office; what goes home with you is the design and the photographs. Not every case can be previewed this way, but a lot of them can, and Dr. Goh will tell you at the exam whether yours is one.
