Nitrous oxide
Breathed in through a small nasal mask, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) takes the edge off within minutes. It's mild, it wears off fast once the mask comes off, and you're clear to drive yourself home right after your visit.

A pill taken before you arrive, oral sedation goes deeper — most patients feel calm and drowsy through the whole visit. Because it lingers afterward, you'll need someone to drive you home.
